FDSN Network Information

FDSN code ZW (2025-2027) Network name GRuMPS: Greenland Runoff Monitoring from Passive Seismology (GRuMPS)
Start year 2025 Operated by
End year 2027 Deployment region -
Description

Our aim is to monitor runoff in Greenland by using passive seismic stations to invert seismic noise from turbulent water flow to produce a calibrated time series of river discharge. In doing so we hope to move from the current sparse measurements of discharge around Greenland, restricted to land-terminating glacier margins with patchy temporal coverage, to systematic, continuous and near-real time monitoring of major glacier catchments, including marine terminating glaciers. This will be achieved through the deployment of 14 in situ passive seismic instruments between 2025 and 2027 at both land and water terminating glacier margins. These will be deployed in conjunction with hydrological and geophysical instruments to parameterise meltwater generation and movement, and validate the seismic approach.
