Description

EAGLE is a three part, British-led experiment to probe lithospheric structure beneath an active rift zone transitional between continental and oceanic rifting. EAGLE involves the Universities of Leeds, Leicester and Royal Holloway working with the University of Addis Ababa and Geological Survey of Ethiopia, as well as Stanford University and the University of Texas ¿El Paso. The work has been permissioned by the Ethiopian Science and Technology Commission. The second experiment within EAGLE, which we refer to as the Rift Valley Experiment, involved the deployment of fifty Guralp 6TD seismometers over an area within the rift valley from Shashamene in the south to Melka Werer in the north. The Rift Valley array lies within the broader EAGLEI array, which itself lies within the Penn State array deployed in 2000-2002, thereby providing a telescoping view of breakup processes.
