FDSN Network Information

FDSN code VI Network name Icelandic National Digital Seismograph Network (SIL or VI)
Start year 1992 Operated by
End year - Deployment region
Description

The initial aims of the the network were to record seismic activity in the two main transform zones of Iceland, the South Iceland Seismic Zone and the Tjörnes Fracture Zone, with a focus on capability to locate small earthquakes for the purpose of monitoring fault initiation, mapping of active subsurface faults and earthquake forecasting. As the network has expanded into the countries volcanic zones, the emphasis has also come to include mapping sub-surface magma migration in the many active volcanoes of Iceland for the purpose of monitoring and forecasting volcanic eruptions.

Additional Notes The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) has been streaming data from 6 stations of the permanent VI (INDSN) network to ORFEUS for a few years. Through an ongoing national RI project EPOS-Iceland, IMO is putting major effort on quality checking station metadata and transcribing waveform data to MSEED from other stations of the VI network and older time periods to make them openly available through ORFEUS.
